Day trips

Rijeka is a fantastic base: it has its own beaches and plenty of restaurants and cafés, while the coast, islands, mountains and Istrian towns are all close enough for varied day trips.

Rijeka as your base

From the sea and islands to the mountains

This is not a catalogue of every possible outing, but a brief personal overview of directions I enjoy and like to share with guests.

Sea and coast

Kostrena and the Crikvenica Riviera combine swimming and coastal walks. On the other side, beneath Učka, Lungomare connects Volosko, Opatija, Ičići, Ika and Lovran; the approximate 10 km covers the whole stretch, and you can walk just part of it.

Krk and Cres

Krk is connected to the mainland by a bridge and has many small, charming places. Cres has its own quieter character and special appeal, but it is a little farther away because the journey includes a ferry. Both islands are also lovely for swimming, so you can combine exploring their towns and villages with time at a beach or cove.

Gorski kotar

Swap the sea for a day of shady forests, lakes and cooler mountain air. Gorski kotar is a lovely choice when you want a break from the summer heat, a little quiet and a walk surrounded by greenery.

Istria

Head to Istria without an overpacked itinerary. Stone-built hilltop towns, narrow lanes, vineyards and olive groves can easily fill a day. Stop for coffee in a small square and leave time for lunch; there is no need to rush here.

Your host's personal selection

Day trips from personal experience

This is not a catalogue of every day trip from Rijeka, but my personal selection of places I know and want to share with guests.

Kostrena and the Crikvenica Riviera work equally well for a walk or a beach day. The stated distances and times describe the full stretches; choose your own section, starting point and direction.

Lungomare · easy 2/5

Volosko – Lovran

  • About 15–20 min by car from InCenter
  • About 10 km / 2.5–3 h · full stretch
  • Difficulty 2/5
  • Seaside walk
  • Villas and Opatija landmarks
  • Beaches and hidden coves
  • Cafés and restaurants

Allow about 15–20 minutes by car from InCenter to Volosko. Lungomare links Volosko, Opatija, Ičići, Ika and Lovran. The estimate of about 10 km and 2.5–3 hours of walking covers the whole named stretch, depending on pace and stops. You can walk just part of it and choose your own starting point and direction. Along the way are historic villas and Opatija landmarks, beaches and hidden coves, plus cafés and restaurants. At Ribarnica Volosko you can choose fresh fish, sit down and have it prepared and brought to your table. In Lovran I have already highlighted Ganeum as the restaurant choice and Lovranski Pub as the more relaxed pub/bar choice.

Along the promenade from Volosko to Lovran, there are beaches and coves where you can stop for a swim. This is not my personal choice for swimming, though; I recommend this stretch above all for a walk by the sea.

Bus 32 towards Opatija and Lovran leaves from the Jelačićev trg stop by InCenter Apartments.

You can choose just part of the promenade, start wherever suits you, walk in either direction at your own pace and add a swimming stop. The distance and time cover the whole described stretch, not a set walking plan or the journey to an individual beach.
